Artist’s Statement

Narcissus is a project created in order to bring female Romanian artists together in their search for self identity. Eight Romanian artists responded to the theme and since then an exchange of communication has generated brilliant developing ideas and collaborations.

These artists come from various backgrounds with ages ranging from 25 to 75, and bring together different representations of identity from different generations and experiences. Although this is by no means a feminist group, it is an opportunity for Romanian female artists to make themselves known outside their immediate artistic circles through this project.

Their interest in female self-identity explores many mediums and concepts from traditional painting and drawing to video and object installation, from self portraits to representations of feelings and personal surroundings. This project was generated in order to develop future awareness of Romanian creativity and the potential it holds, as well as opening new windows to Romanian artists in order to become more internationally known.

All audiences will find something interesting in this exhibition. It is hoped that this project will generate some exchanges of information and future collaborations with other institutions and individuals involved in the development of the arts.
