For the past 20 years I have been painting the mountains in Val Chiavenna and Val Bregaglia in the Northern Italian Alps.

As with ourselves, the mountains have moods - In summer they are bright and welcoming but in winter, often foreboding and in the darkest corners seemingly quite sinister.

Patches of light and colour become luxuries but the villages in Val Bregaglia are dark from November 13th to January 13th. A friend of mine, brought up in the valley thought the whole world was dark between those dates when he was a child!

In Chiavenna, the main town of the area, with its narrow streets, cool in summer but often cold in winter, people meet each other at 11am each day during November and December in the main square while the sun deigns to radiate fleeting light and a little warmth.

Many people find wintertime difficult in these valleys. Personally the Station & Tavernella bars can always be relied upon to provide a glowing atmosphere!
