Bursary recipient Steven Allbutt reconstructs memories of a journey by forcing roses to bloom in winter...

Leeds-based artist Steven Allbutt follows a series of notable appearances in recent arts events-including Situation Leeds "The Congregation" & Light Night "Hydro Logic"-with his first solo exhibition this February at South Square Gallery, Bradford.

Capped is about a physical and emotional journey, charting the artist's conversion from venture capitalist foot soldier to emerging artist. It takes as its starting point time spent at a flower farm in Sapa, North West Vietnam, during two significant journeys to the country between 2002 and 2004.

Steven manipulates an environment within the gallery to explore the precarious balance between cultivation and natural processes, alluding to further associations of industry, colonisation and the limits of our existence.
