I spent April 2007 staying with Gu Xinyang in China. Living and eating with his family, rather than in tourist hotels. Last time I stayed with him we did the traditional sights - Forbidden City, Ming Tombs, Terracotta Warriors etc. This time I wanted to see more of ordinary Chinese life. Gu was reluctant to let me do this, because he thought such pictures might not reflect well on modern China. This meant many of my photographs were quick "grab-shots", either taken from a moving MPV as we drove between Beijing and Shanghai, or walking through different towns and cities.
