Refugees Workshop | October 2010

During October, Andrew Lister's exhibition "Appropriating Power" explored the power relationships of contemporary conflicts and in particular the war on terror.

In response to this thought-provoking exhibition, South Square organised a workshop for refugees living in Bradford who have themselves fled war-torn parts of the globe to seek asylum. The participants brought in their own fabrics, in particular white handkerchiefs, and painted onto these symbols of peace and their own experiences and views about conflict and war.

The outcome was an extremely emotional and poignant reflection where some of the participants reveal their unimaginable past as a child soldier.
