Supporting the next generation of Contemporary Craft Makers in the UK.

In the Making. . . is a fascinating insight into the world of contemporary craft practice, for those wanting to develop a career in Making, or who simply have an interest in contemporary craft and design.

A programme of showcase exhibitions and Artist/Maker-led talks and workshops, this project will act as a platform for early-career contemporary craft Makers to progress their creative careers. Providing advice from established Makers and professionals within the industry, support and promotion through South Square Gallery, as well as creating and highlighting future opportunities for early-career makers who are motivated to become the next generation of successful creative practitioners.

This project will also give visitors to the gallery a ‘behind-the-scenes’ view into one of the largest growing creative industries in the UK. See the work of well known and established Artists and Makers, whose work can be found in galleries throughout the country. Chat with them about their practice during our scheduled talks, and let them share their skills with you and make your own piece of contemporary craft in our Artist-led workshops.


Meeting Room Gallery

In the Making. . . Emerge is a changing series of exhibitions that will showcase the work of talented early-career Makers and contemporary craft and art students, with a focus on Printmaking, Textiles, and Ceramics.

Each exhibition will run for 2 weeks, with each focusing on one specific contemporary craft practice:


Printmaking – 3rd to 15th February

Community Room Gallery

Artist talks and workshops by:

Gain an insight into the practices and careers of six acclaimed and established contemporary craft Artists, Makers, and creative professionals. Their work will be on display in the gallery, alongside photographs and other material that will show their practice in action. A series of artist talks and artist-led workshops will accompany this exhibition.


Printmaking Workshop with Sarah Harris, Printmaker.
Sunday 8th February
12pm to 3pm
£6 per person, free to students.

Working with popular screen printer Sarah Harris, this workshop will introduce you to a number of printmaking methods which can be used with just the basic equipment.


Artist's Talk and Studio Visit with June Russell, Printmaker.
Thursday 12th February
5pm to 6:30pm

As a highly acclaimed printmaker, June has found great success and respect as a creative professional. June will talk about her practice and career, and join her afterwards as she shows you around her studio here at South Square Centre.


Textiles Workshop with Morwenna Catt, Textile Artist.

Step into the fascinating world of Morwenna Catt's creations. Join her in exploring textile practices, and gain inspiration from her wealth of creative knowledge.


Artist's Talk with Hannah Lamb, Textile Artist.
Wednesday 4th March

Listen to Hannah talk about her incredible work and career as a textile artist. Gain an insight into exhibiting in galleries all over the UK, and learn more about her motivations to make.


Early-Career Mentoring with Jill Shaddock, Ceramicist.
Thursday 19th March
Sessions available: 11:20am-11:50am, 12pm-12:30pm, 1:30pm-2pm, 2:10pm-2:40pm, 2:50pm-3:20pm
Free (available to students, graduates, and early-career makers only).

Book a one-to-one mentoring session with renowned ceramicist Jill, who will give advice and help you to develop your creative practice and career as a professional maker.


Creative Careers Talk with Ed Chadwick, Owner of Snug Gallery.
Thursday 19th March
3:30pm to 5pm

Founder and owner of contemporary craft gallery, Snug, in Hebden Bridge, Ed will talk about his experience of working with Artists and Designer-Makers, and share his wisdom on all things craft and design.


Creative Networking Event
Friday 27th March
6pm to 8pm
An opportunity to meet established Artists and Makers, Gallerists, members of art organisations, educators, creative industry professionals, and early-career Makers, to chat about contemporary craft, create new contacts, and find out about opportunities and events, all in the relaxed and informal atmosphere of South Square Gallery.
